Farai’s Favourites: Top 10 songs of 2020!

Despite 2020 being an overwhelming year we’ve been blessed with some amazing songs/albums, so it’s only right I share my Top 10 of 2020. I’m grateful for the music that was shared with us this year because God knows just how many of us needed some uplifting; just some good music to get us through the day, week, month or year. There’s no doubt I will be listening to all of the songs listed in the New Year as well. Enough of the small talk- in no particular order, let’s begin…

FREE MIND – TEMS

I have to start off with a song that could quite easily be my favourite song released this year. I first discovered her song “Damages” via @patriciabright on Instagram. I shortly found out she had just released an album and I had to check it out. Not only is this one of my favourite songs but her album is by far my favourite album of the year. It’s rare that you come across an album with 0 skips and takes you on a journey. This is the album for me. 10/10 would recommend!

HEAVENLY MOTHER – PIP MILLETT

I still remember what I was doing and where I was the moment I realised I was in love with this song. It was during the first lockdown and I was on my way back from a long walk alone. It was just me, myself and I surrounded by trees and a lake to my right. I had this song on repeat for a good 15 mins and I just felt so calm and let myself be free. This song is from her latest album “Lost In June”, yet again another album that I adore.

BREAKING NEWS – DEXTA DAPS

It was always the beat for me… Until recently when I decided to have a little karaoke session and googled the lyrics. For those of you who don’t know, there’s a positive meaning behind the song. Long story short he’s telling women to only be with men who treat them well and telling men to treat their women like Queens, if they think they’re Kings. I’m a real fan of this one Daps!

THE WORSHIP MEDLEY: RECKLESS LOVE… – TAUREN WELLS, ESSENTIAL WORSHIP & DAVIES

I like to listen to gospel music first thing in the morning before I start my day and this is just the perfect song. I remember hearing this song in a video for the first time and immediately scrolling through the comments in search of the name. Then for a few weeks straight this was pretty much the only gospel song I played in the morning. This is definitely one of my fav gospel songs!

BEEN AWAY – BRENT FAIYAZ

When asked who are my favourite artists, Brent Faiyaz is a name I always mention. This is a song from his latest album “F*** The World” and “Been Away” is a song I constantly have on repeat. Whether you’re on a walk, late night drive or simply chilling at home, this is the song.

YOU LOSE – SHAE UNIVERSE

Shae Universe has released two singles this year, both of which I have had on repeat. So as you can imagine deciding which one to include in my Top 10 list wasn’t at all easy. I first discovered her sound in 2018 (“No Stallin”) and instantly knew I’d be a fan of her music. She is undoubtably one of my favourite British artists. I’m due to see her perform live as soon as we’re out of this tier business!

JOHN VULI GATE – MAPARA A JAZZ FT. NTOSH GAZI & COLANO

It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t include at least ONE Amapiano song in my Top 10. For those of you who don’t know, Amapiano originated in South Africa in 2012. It’s a style of house music that mainly involves the piano and drums. I’m not the greatest dancer but whenever this song comes on, I have to get up. If you don’t know about Amapiano music then make it your mission in 2021 to listen to at least one song. Feel free to message me for song recommendations, I’d be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

ESSENCE – WIZKID FT. TEMS

After 6 long years Wizkid finally decided to drop his latest album titled “Made In Lagos”. I know many people were looking forward to this album and judging by the reviews, he did not disappoint. After letting the album marinate for a week or so, I finally gave it a listen and for me “Essence” tops it and of course it’s featuring my girl Tems.

SOWETO BLUES – JULS FT. BUSISWA & JAZ KARIS

“Soweto Blues” dropped at the beginning of the first lockdown and it’s exactly what I needed to keep my spirits high. Yet again another song that calms me and allows me to move freely. One word to describe this song: Vibe.

LOADING – OLAMIDE

This song just about made it into my Top 10 as it was released in October. Whether you’re a dancer or not, this song will have you up on your feet. I can’t help but share the video of 9 kids dancing to this song, it puts the biggest smile on my face!

This has been MY Top 10 songs released THIS year. So many other songs I’ve loved but I said top 10, so 10 it is. I’m certainly looking forward for what’s to come in 2021.
